5 things to consider when choosing a freight company
When it comes to importing and exporting, there are many things that you need to keep in mind when choosing a freight company to work with.
Depending on the type of goods you are moving, there are several elements which could make the process more complicated, especially if you are transporting items across different continents or they require a specialist type of container for example.
With all that in mind, CLA UK have put together a list of five things to consider when choosing a freight company to work with to try and make the process a little easier for you – read on to find out more!
1. Check who’s responsible for the goods you are moving
It’s important to establish who will be responsible for the goods that you are moving at the various stages of the supply change.
This ensures that each party is aware of their obligations and makes it clear who needs to pay for any costs such as insurance, duties and tax too.
2. Find out what options for transportation they have available
If your goods are perishable, for example, then temperature controlled transportation will be required to ensure that they arrive in perfect condition – can the freight company provide this?
3. Do they use agents or several service providers?
Having agents who operate in the country where your goods are being delivered can be helpful if delays or other unexpected situations arise.
Also, if a freight company uses several service providers then they will be able to provide you with complete flexibility if a particular shipping company doesn’t have space available.
4. Who will the shipment manager be?
Make sure you find out the details for the contact who will be responsible for managing your shipment during the transport process – in the case of any problems arising you’ll need to know whether they should be contacted by telephone, email or automatic web tracking service so that you’re able to speak to them as quickly as possible.
5. What insurance do they have?
In the unfortunate case that your cargo is lost, damaged or stolen during transit then the freight company should have sufficient insurance in place to ensure your goods are protected – make sure you confirm this with them before booking a consignment!
